A Possible Emission Feature in an X-ray Afterglow of Grb 970828 as a Radiative Recombination Edge

چکیده

A gamma-ray burst of 28 August 1997 was localized by the All-Sky Monitor on the Rossi XTE satellite and its coordinates were promptly disseminated. An ASCA followup started 1.17 days after the burst as a Target of Opportunity Observation and detected an X-ray afterglow. The spectral data displayed a hump around ∼ 5 keV and an absorption column of 7.1×10 cm. This hump structure is likely a recombination edge of iron in the vicinity of the source, taking account of the redshift z = 0.9578 found for the likely host galaxy of the associated radio flare. Radiative Recombination edge and Continuum model can interpret the spectrum from highly ionized plasma in a non equilibrium ionization state. The absorption could be also due to the medium presumably in the vicinity of the GRB. Subject headings: gamma rays: bursts — line: identification — line: formation — X-rays: general

Iron line in the afterglow: a key to unveil Gamma–Ray Burst progenitors

The discovery of a powerful and transient iron line feature in the X–ray afterglow spectra of gamma–ray bursts would be a major breakthrough for understanding the nature of their progenitors. Piro et al. (1999) and Yoshida et al. (1999) report such a detection in the afterglow of GRB 970508 and GRB 970828, respectively. We discuss how such a strong line could be produced in the various scenario...

The discovery of a powerful and transient iron line feature in the X–ray afterglow spectrum of GRB 970508 and GRB 970828, if confirmed, would be a major breakthrough for understanding the nature the progenitor of gamma–ray bursts. We show that a large mass of iron very close to the burster is necessary to produce the emission line. This in itself strongly limits the possible progenitor of the g...

X-Ray Spectral Diagnostics of Gamma-Ray Burst Environments.

Recently, detection of discrete features in the X-ray afterglow spectra of GRB 970508 and GRB 970828 was reported. The most natural interpretation of these features is that they are redshifted Fe K emission complexes. The identification of the line emission mechanism has drastic implications for the inferred mass of radiating material and hence the nature of the burst site. X-ray spectroscopy p...

The puzzling case of GRB 990123 : multiwavelength afterglow study ⋆

We report on the BeppoSAX data analysis of the afterglow of Gamma–Ray Burst (GRB) 990123, one of the brightest GRBs detected by BeppoSAX. Mainly due to its exceptional brightness, this is the only source for which the Wide Field Cameras have allowed an early detection of the X–ray afterglow between ∼20 and 60 min after the GRB trigger. Besides, again for the first time, high-energy emission fro...

X-ray Lines and Absorption Edges in Grbs and Their Afterglows

Absorption and Reprocessing of Gamma-ray burst radiation in the environment of cosmological GRBs can be used as a powerful probe of the elusive nature of their progenitors. In particular, transient X-ray emission line and absorption features in the prompt and early afterglows of GRBs are sensitive to details of the location and density structure of the reprocessing and/or absorbing material. To...
